Disaster research group Enki Research has estimated that Hurricane Irma, which is currently battering Florida, could cause $172 billion of damage, both insured and uninsured, in the US alone. This would make Irma one of the most devastating US weather/climate disasters by cost. At present, the top 10 list, six of which occurred this century, is led by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, with a CPI-adjusted cost of $160 billion.
