Ischemic heart disease remains leading cause of death in India

The ischemic heart disease, a condition that affects the supply of blood to the heart, continues to be the main cause of death in India even after more than a decade, according to a study. The chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, an umbrella term to describe progressive lung diseases, is the second on the list of the leading causes of death, followed by diarrheal diseases. Two causes - neonatal preterm birth and other neonatal - that figured in the top 10 in 2005 have been pushed to the 13th and 16th spot respectively while diabetes and chronic kidney disease figure among the top 10 in 2016.
