The Uttar Pradesh cabinet on Wednesday approved changes to the UP Excise Act, to include death penalty or life imprisonment to those responsible for deaths due to consumption of illicit or spurious liquor. Once formalised, UP would become the third state to provide for death penalty for bootleggers, after Gujarat and Delhi. In 2015, UP was ranked fifth among Indian states on deaths due to consumption of spurious liquor.
