India’s foodgrain production in the Kharif season (July to October) is estimated to be 134.67 million tonnes in 2017-18, a drop of 2.8% over the record 138.52 million tonnes in 2016-17, according to estimates released by the government on Monday. The fall is being attributed to the uneven distribution of rains during the south-west monsoon between June and September, which is the primary source of irrigation for over half of the country’s crop area.
