Government launches ‘Saubhagya’ scheme to provide electricity to all

The government launched a scheme on Monday to provide free electricity connections to 40 million poor families in rural and urban areas by December 2018. The total outlay for the scheme, which will complement the rural electrification scheme Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), is Rs 16,320 crore, with gross budgetary support of Rs 12,320 crore. DDUGJY aimed to provide electricity to 18,452 unelectrified villages by December 2018. Of the 40 million households yet to be electrified. Uttar Pradesh leads the list, followed by Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.
